Is this one more sign that employees are beginning to chafe under the working conditions that were the inevitable outcome of the economic downturn?
Forty-four percent of workers said they would be willing to relocate for a career opportunity, according to a nationwide study by CareerBuilder.
Evidence the trend may already be underway: Of workers who were laid off in the last year and found new jobs, 20 percent relocated to a new city or state, CareerBuilder said.
Companies say they’ll pick up the tab
Interestingly, as workers show more willingness to relocate for better job offers, employers are saying they’re planning on paying to bring talent to their locations.
According to the CareerBuilder research, 32% of employers reported they would be willing to pay to relocate new employees in 2012. Nineteen percent would be willing to pay a smaller first year salary in order to give a signing bonus to relocate an employee.
The positions employers are willing to pay relocation costs or bonuses to fill:
- Engineering – cited by 30% of employers
- Information Technology – 23%
- Business Development – 21%
- Sales – 21%
- Financial – 16%
- Marketing – 13%, and
- Legal – 11%.
The CareerBuilder survey was conducted from Nov. 9 to Dec. 5, 2011 among more than 3,000 employers and more than 7,000 workers across the country.
